25° Congresso Mariologico Mariano Internazionale

Cari fratelli e sorelle,

partecipo di cuore alla vostra gioia di celebrare, anche se in modo diverso dal solito, questo 25° Congresso Mariologico Mariano Internazionale, sul tema Maria tra teologie e culture oggi.  Modelli, comunicazioni, prospettive. Il nostro rallegrarci non dimentichi il grido silenzioso di tanti fratelli e sorelle che vivono in condizioni di grande difficoltà, aggravate dalla pandemia. La vera gioia che viene dal Signore dà sempre spazio alle voci dei dimenticati, perché insieme a loro si possa costruire un futuro migliore. Maria, nella bellezza della sequela evangelica e nel servizio al bene comune dell’umanità  e del pianeta, educa sempre all’ascolto di queste voci e Lei stessa si fa voce dei senza voce per «partorire un mondo nuovo, dove tutti siamo fratelli, dove ci sia posto per ogni scartato delle nostre società» (Lett. enc. Fratelli tutti, 278). 

Nei suoi più di sessant’anni cli attività,  la Pontificia Academia Mariana Internationalis, coordinando e riunendo i cultori di mariologia del mondo intero, specialmente attraverso la celebrazione dei Congressi Mariologici Mariani Internazionali. Ha offerto spunti, intuizioni, idee e approfondimenti in un mutamento d’epoca che trasforma «velocemente il modo cli vivere, cli relazionarsi, di comunicare ed elaborare il pensiero, di rapportarsi tra le generazioni umane e di comprendere e di vivere la fede» (Papa Francesco, Discorso alla Curia romana, 21 dicembre 2019). Tali Congressi «sono una chiara testimonianza di come la mariologia sia una presenza necessaria di dialogo fra le culture, capace di alimentare la fraternità e la pace» (Discorso alle Accademie Pontificie, 4 dicembre 2019).

Sappiamo, infatti, che «la teologia e la cultura d’ispirazione cristiana sono state all’altezza della loro missione quando hanno saputo vivere rischiosamente e con fedeltà sulla frontiera» (Cost. ap. Veritatis gaudium, 5). E sulle frontiere la Madre del Signore ha una sua specifica presenza: è la Madre di tutti, indipendentemente dall’etnia o dalla nazionalità. Così la figura di Maria diventa punto di riferimento per una cultura capace di superare le barriere che possono creare divisione. Perciò, sul cammino cli questa cultura cli fraternità, lo Spirito ci chiama ad accogliere nuovamente il segno cli consolazione e di sicura speranza che ha il nome, il volto, il cuore di Maria, donna, discepola, madre e amica. È lungo questo cammino che lo Spirito continua a dirci «che i tempi che viviamo sono i tempi di Maria» (Discorso alla Pontificia Facoltà Teologica “Marianum “, 20 ottobre 2020). La Pontificia Academia Mariana Internationalis, perseverando nel suo impegno di rinnovamento, cerca di leggere i segni di questi tempi, a beneficio della Chiesa e di ogni donna e uomo di buona volontà.

Il mistero che la persona di Maria racchiude in sé è il mistero stesso della Parola di Dio incarnata. Da qui partiva l’incoraggiamento di Papa Benedetto: «Esorto [… ] gli studiosi ad approfondire maggiormente il rapporto tra mariologia e teologia della Parola. [… ) Maria nella Parola di Dio è veramente a casa sua, ne esce e vi rientra con naturalezza. Ella parla e pensa con la Parola di Dio; la Parola di Dio diventa parola sua, e la sua parola nasce dalla Parola di Dio. Così si rivela, inoltre, che i suoi pensieri sono in sintonia con i pensieri di Dio, che il suo volere è un volere insieme con Dio. Essendo intimamente penetrata dalla Parola di Dio, ella può diventare madre della Parola incarnata» (Esort. ap. Verbum Domini, 27-28).

Non dimentichiamo che è proprio questa stessa Parola a nutrire la pietà popolare, che attinge con naturalezza alla Madonna, esprimendo e trasmettendo «la vita teologale presente nella pietà dei popoli cristiani, specialmente nei poveri [… ]; una vita teologale  animata dall’azione dello Spirito Santo [… ], frutto del Vangelo inculturato» (Esort. ap. Evangelii gaudium, 125-126).

Ringrazio la Pontificia Academia Mariana lnternationalis per aver preparato e organizzato questo Congresso, che costituisce un momento importante del servizio di coordinamento della teologia mariana affidato all’Accademia. Ricordando che San Francesco d’Assisi circondava la Vergine Maria «di immenso amore perché aveva reso Dio nostro fratello» (Bonaventura da Bagnoregio, Leggenda maggiore, IX, 3), invio di cuore a ciascuno di voi la Benedizione Apostolica.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I warmly share in your joy of celebrating, even if in a different way than usual, this 25th International Marian Mariological Congress, on the theme of Mary between theologies and cultures today. Models, communications, perspectives. May our rejoicing not forget the silent cry of so many brothers and sisters who live in conditions of great difficulty, aggravated by the pandemic. The true joy that comes from the Lord always gives space to the voices of the forgotten, so that together with them we can build a better future. Mary, in the beauty of the following of the Gospel and in the service of the common good of humanity and the planet, always teaches us to listen to these voices and she herself becomes the voice of the voiceless for “she wants to give birth to a new world, where all of us are brothers and sisters, where there is room for all those whom our societies discard” (Lett. enc. Fratelli tutti, 278).

In its more than sixty years of activity, the Pontificia Academia Mariana Internationalis, coordinating and bringing together the lovers of Mariology from all over the world, especially through the celebration of the International Marian Mariological Congresses has offered acumens, insights, ideas and perceptions into a change of era that “rapidly transform our ways of living, of relating to one another, of communicating and thinking, of how different generations relate to one another and how we understand and experience faith” (Pope Francis, Message to the Roman Curia, 21 December 2019). These Congresses “are a clear testament to the fact that Mariology is a necessary presence for dialogue among cultures and is capable of nourishing fraternity and peace” (Message to the Pontifical Academies, 4 December 2019).

We know, in fact, that “Theology and Christian culture have lived up to their mission whenever they were ready to take risks and remain faithful on the borderline.” (Cost. ap. Veritatis gaudium, 5). And on the borders the Mother of the Lord has her own specific presence: she is the Mother of all, regardless of ethnicity or nationality. Thus, the figure of Mary becomes a reference point for a culture capable of overcoming the barriers that can create division. Therefore, on the path of this culture of fraternity, the Spirit calls us to welcome once again the sign of consolation and sure hope that has the name, the face, the heart of Mary, woman, disciple, mother and friend. It is along this path that the Spirit continues to tell us that “the times we live in are the times of Mary.» (Message to the Pontifical Theological Faculty “Marianum “, 20 October 2020). The Pontificia Academia Mariana Internationalis, persevering in its commitment to renewal, seeks to read the signs of these times, for the benefit of the Church and of every woman and man of goodwill.

The mystery that the person of Mary embodies in herself is the very mystery of the Incarnate Word of God. Hence the encouragement of Pope Benedict: “ I would encourage scholars as well to study the relationship between Mariology and the theology of the word. […] Here we see how completely at home Mary is with the word of God, with ease she moves in and out of it. She speaks and thinks with the word of God; the word of God becomes her word, and her word issues from the word of God. Here we see how her thoughts are attuned to the thoughts of God, how her will is one with the will of God. Since Mary is completely imbued with the word of God, she is able to become the Mother of the Word Incarnate” (Esort. ap. Verbum Domini, 27-28).

Let us not forget that it is precisely this same Word that nourishes popular piety, which draws naturally from Our Lady, expressing and transmitting “ the theological life present in the piety of Christian peoples, especially among their poor […]a theological life nourished by the working of the Holy Spirit […] fruit of the inculturated Gospel” (Esort. ap. Evangelii gaudium, 125-126).

I want to thank the Pontificia Academia Mariana lnternationalis for preparing and organizing this Congress, which constitutes an important moment in the service of coordination of Marian theology entrusted to the Academy. Recalling that St. Francis of Assisi surrounded the Virgin Mary “with immense love because she had made God our brother” (Bonaventure Da Bagnoregio, Leggenda maggiore, IX, 3), I send my heartfelt Apostolic Blessing to each one of you.
